ALLEN, Vonnie Inez Damron

Funeral services for Vonie Allen will be conducted Saturday, June 23, 2012 at 2 p.m. from the Martin Funeral Chapel of Elk City with Dr. Russell Duck and Rev. Danny Ringer officiating. Interment will be in the Red Hill Cemetery under the direction of the Martin Funeral Home of Elk City.
Vonnie Inez Damron Allen was born January 25, 1912 on the Damron Homestead in the Herring Commuity north of Elk City to Daniel M. and Algin (Hodges) Damron and passed away Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at the age of 100. She was honored on her 100th birthday with family and friends in January. She graduated from Herring High School in May of 1930 and was married to Granvile William “Bill” Allen on July 5, 1931 in the Baptist parsonage in Cheyenn, OK. They remained in the Herring Community where they farmed and ranched for the next 43 years. Vonnie was active in the community and also the Home Demonstration Club. She was known as an excelloent cook and loved having people in her home. She always grew a big vegetable garden and a beautiful flower garden. After her family was raised, she attained an LPN degree and spent several years working in nursing homes, hospitals and as a private nurse. In 1974, they left the farm and moved to Elk City. Vonnie enjoyed taking trips and if a trip was suggested, it did not take her long to pack her bags. She traveled on mission trips and went with a group to the Holy Land where she rode a camel, visited Jacob’s Well and other inspirational experiences. She was a member of the First Baptisst Church of Elk City where she was active in her Sunday School Class and other church and community events.
Vonnie was preceded in death by her parents, all of her brothers and sistersz and her husband Bill, in 1991 after 60 years of marriage.
Survivors include 2 sons: Billy Allen and his wife Elray of Elk City, Joe Allen and his wife Shirley of Elk City, 3 granddaughters, JoBrenda Rogers and husband Jim of Elk City, Kelly Allen of Okarche, OK, Martha Jones of Texarkana, TX, grandson, Greg Allen of Yukon, OK, 7 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
