William Walter Viers was born August 22, 1910 in Sayre, Oklahoma and passed away January 6, 1989 in the Sayre Memorial Hospital at the age of 78 years, four months and fifteen days.
Walter, the son of Thomas Jefferson and Irena Viers, married Hilda Fern Barnes, February 25, 1934 in Sayre, Oklahoma and they lived in Berlin during which time Walter drove a school bus for the Berlin School system for nine years. He later began driving a milk truck in 1941 and serviced the surrounding communities until 1951. It was in 1972 that he took over the mistletoe truck and drove for the Mistletoe Company for four years. In 1971 Walter and Fern began operating the Viers Filling Station here in Sayre, which they ran until his retirement twelve years later in 1983. Although Walter had owned and operated many businesses he continued to farm and enjoyed this the most.
He had been a member of the Sayre Church of Christ for a number of years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son. He is survived by his wife, Fern of the home; three sons, Marvin and his wife, Lawana of Sayre; Troyce of Sayre, Oklahoma, Cletis and his wife, Michelle of San Antonio, Texas; three sisters, Vuelah Viers and Ima Marshall, both of Elk City, Oklahoma. Beatrice Marshall of Sayre, OK; ten grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral service was Monday, January 9, 1989 at 2:00 p.m. with Jerry Moffitt officiating at the Sayre Church of Christ. Burial was in the Berlin Cemetery under the direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Service.
