Ruby Margaret Martin was born May 20th, 1926 on the family farm northwest of Leedey, Oklahoma to Florence Margriete (Tilton) and Russell Broadbent. She passed away in Elk City, Oklahoma on Monday, May 6th, 2024 at the age of 97 years, 11 months and 16 days.
Ruby grew up on the family farm and attended Liberty Center where she graduated in 1944. After graduation, she moved to Cheyenne with her sister and they both found employment at Security State Bank where she was a clerk and a teller. It was during this time she met and was married to Lloyd Lee Martin in Cheyenne, Oklahoma on November 15th, 1947. They continued to make their home in Cheyenne and began working in the county assessors office and also Johnny Cannon Insurance. Ruby and Lloyd purchased Jarvis Grocery changing the name to Martin’s Trading Post. They continued to own and operate the grocery store until 1974. Ruby cared for and babysat her grandchildren until 1976 when they built Martin’s Trading Post opening it to the public in 1977. Ruby continued to be a part of the day to day operations until 1999 when she formally retired when Lloyd passed away. Throughout the years, Ruby loved to read and write short stories about her family. She also enjoyed genealogy and beyond astute in the Broadbent and Martin family history. Ruby is recognized as a “Life” member of the GFWC Platonic Club of Cheyenne for her years of faithful service. She participated in the organization’s numerous philanthropic projects, such as the Christmas veterans’ project for the Clinton VA hospital. Ruby will always be remembered as a part of the clubs’s annual recognition of Senior girls at the Mother/Daughter Buffet for her famous tortilla roll ups. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, Genealogy Society, and the longest living member of the Cheyenne Methodist Church.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lloyd; 2 sons, Phillip Lloyd, and Gary Lynn; 1 grandson, Kevin Martin; 1 son-in-law, Wes Hawthorne; 1 granddaughter, Jennifer Martin; 3 brothers, Elmer Broadbent, Howard Broadbent, and Junior Broadbent.
Ruby is survived by 1 daughter, Mary Hawthorne, Tulsa, OK; 3 grandchildren, Scott Martin and wife, Kristy, Cheyenne, OK, Kari Ford and husband, Donnie, Jr., Cheyenne, OK, and Aubrey Clark and husband, Chris, Elk City, OK; 4 great grandchildren, Jakob Ford, Jarrett Ford, Annisa Martin, and Rhiannon Clark; 1 sister, Ruthe Kendall; 1 brother, Billy Broadbent and wife, Leah and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services at First Methodist Church, Cheyenne, May 14, 2024 at 2:00 with interment in Cheyenne Cemetery.
