Loel E. Briggs
( April 11, 1925 – November 16, 2016
)
Loel E. Briggs, one of twelve
children, was born April 11, 1925 in Durham, Oklahoma to Eva Lucille (Sadler)
and Thurman Earl Briggs. He passed away November 16, 2016 at OU Medical Center
in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at the age of 91 years, 7 months and 5 days.

Loel grew up in the Durham community and attended schools at Cheyenne. At the
age of 17 he joined the United States Navy and was stationed in Japan and
Hawaii during World War II. During his service his typing skills were so
accelerated that he was typing and sending messages before, during and after
the dropping of the atomic bomb. After serving our nation and being honorably
discharged in 1946 he returned to Cheyenne to complete his education graduating
from Cheyenne High School in 1947. After graduation he furthered his education
at Southwestern Oklahoma State University where he received his bachelors
degree in music. Loel later obtained his master’s degree from Oklahoma Baptist
University. He started his 44 year teaching career in Sun City, Kansas and
later at Laverne, Okeene and Alva. During his time at Okeene he won many band
contests and awards for his outstanding band performances. After his retirement
in Oklahoma he moved to San Antonio, Texas where he began his second band
teaching career taking his bands to the Rose Bowl parades. To end his second
teaching career Loel began teaching junior high students until his second
retirement in 1980. Loel remained in San Antonio until he moved back to
Cheyenne in the late 90’s to make his home. He enjoyed caring for his flowers,
gardening, traveling, collecting antiques, working on the family museum, being
active in the historical society and seeing many sights on his numerous
adventures. Above all Loel loved his church and had the gift of a beautiful
voice to which he used in choirs and praising the Lord.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 8 brothers and sisters and 1 grandson,
Quenton Myatt.

He is survived by his daughter, Teressa Dotter and husband Stephen, Edmond, OK;
son, Dr. Kenney Weinmeister and wife, Tina, Dallas, TX; 4 grandchildren, Dr.
Zachary Myatt, Piedmont, OK, Cameron Dotter, Edmond, OK, Alexandra Weinmeister,
Dallas, TX and John Weinmeister, Dallas, TX; 3 great grandchildren, Gracie
Myatt, Grant Myatt and Boston Dotter; 1 brother, Sherman Briggs and wife, Joy,
Las Cruces, NM; 2 sisters, Nadine Davis, Amarillo, TX and Joan Decker, Nevada;
1 sister-in-law, Addie Briggs, Merced, CA and a large host of other relatives
and friends.

Celebration of Life Services Monday,
November 21, 2016 at 2:00 in Cheyenne Baptist Church.
