CHALFANT, Mary Glover

Mary Glover Chalfant was born March 19, 1918 in Rush Springs, Oklahoma to Alma and Sterling Roger Glover. She passed away January 25, 2015 at her home north of Cheyenne, Oklahoma at the age of 96 years, 10 months and six days.
Mary grew up in Rush Springs graduating from high school in 1936.  After graduation, she attended the University of Oklahoma and graduated from Oklahoma College for Women in May of 1944. She was married to James Warren Chalfant at Rush Springs, Oklahoma on January 7, 1939. Mary supported him strongly and unconditionally throughout World War II
and the Korean Conflict during his time of service. She was an equal partner in the establishment of their ranch North of Cheyenne. Mary was unfaulting in the rearing of two children, Jay and Gay, the grandchildren, the great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
Mary has received cards and letters from girls and women she supported through their early years showing acknowledgement for generosity. Two women, in particular, have maintained a relationship with Mary – Lana Merrick and Martha Anderson.
Mary was a supporter of the University of Oklahoma, Roger Mills County and was also a steward of the land, cattle, horses and dogs that she took care of and considered them her pets. Mary was a cradle Methodist and was able to recite the entire book of Ruth. She was a member of the Platonic Club of Cheyenne and various other civic organizations. One of her most prized hobbies was painting china and her work was broadly displayed. She also was instrumental in carrying out fine art activities for high school girls.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, J.Warren Chalfant and his parents, W.L. and Loura Chalfant, one daughter-in-law, Carolyn Chalfant, one sister, Ruth Spencer and one nephew, Ralph Spencer.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Gay Chalfant, Amarillo, TX; one son, Jay Chalfant, Cheyenne, OK; 7 grandsons, Tim Chalfant and wife, Belinda; Mike Chalfant and wife, Jodi; Pat Chalfant and wife, Shauna; Cris Chalfant and wife, Gretchen; Slater Chalfant Elza and wife, Shanna; Sterling Elza and Sam Elza and wife, Holly; 9 great grandchildren: Sarah, Luke, Hunter, Madi, Cooper, Drake, Camden, Sterling and Chloe; two great great grandchildren, Blake and Brett; special friends, Martha Anderson and Lana Merrick and a host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the Cheyenne United Methodist Youth.
Services were held on January 28, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in the Cheyenne United Methodist Church with burial in the Cheyenne Cemetery.
