Churchill, Sylvester (Sy)

Sylvester (Sy) Churchill passed from this life May 13, 2023, at the age of 98 years 6 months and 9 days. He was born Nov 4, 1924, to Fred R. Churchill and Amy Lee McCurdy Churchill. He joined older siblings Wallace and Lucille McCurdy and Fredda Mae Churchill. Later they were joined by siblings Melvin and Juanita. They attended school at Durham School when Sy and Melvin could be torn away from their hunting and trapping adventures.

As WWII intervened Sy joined the army to serve in the medical corps and cook learning much about staying healthy to add to the veterinary skills he had acquired from his Father.

All through life he had a great love of handling and raising livestock.

After his military service he met and married his first love Bernie Faye Bonser on Nov 10, 1950. To this union were born two daughters Faye Ann in 1953 and Cathy Diann in 1954.

They were his home crew helping with the farming and cattle through the years. As the operation grew into custom harvesting and spanned 7 states for many years and touching numerous lives over 5 decades.

After Bernie Faye’s passing Sy found a love to share another chapter of life with for over 20 years in the person of Neva Parman. In this joining he gained four wonderful step children in Randy Parman, Marveda Parman, Kathy Tidwell and Dayna Coker along with their families.

Throughout his life he enjoyed music and dancing (either western or square) and would travel miles to find a good dance. Also his interests included cards, dominoes and Farkle which he usually won at easily.

If anything was needing fixed around the community Sy was the first to pitch in and stay to the finish.

Sy lived a long and industrious life out living his parents, siblings and both wives. He carried with him the characteristics of the pioneer, sturdy, genteel and a willingness to endure any hardships for those whom he loved.

He is survived by his daughters Ann (Bill) Peetoom and Cathy (Linn) Canary. One Grandson W. A.(Stephanie) Peetoom and three Great Grandsons Will, Josh and Alex Peetoom.

Also mourning his death are his four step children Randy(Denise) Parman, Marveda Parman, Kathy(Doug) Tidwell, Dayna(Dewayne) Coker and many Grand and Greatgrand children.

 Services will be Monday, May 22, 2023 at 2:00 in Durham Church of Christ.
