Merton Glen “Bud” Hughes of Hammon, Oklahoma was born on April 28, 1929 in Hammon, Oklahoma. He was the son of Perry Otis and Vera Belle (Esler) Hughes. Bud passed away on June 6, 2014, at the age of 85 in his residence in Hammon, Oklahoma surrounded by his family and loved ones.
Bud met and married Twanna Cutberth in 1951, to this union were born two children, Randy and Sandy. She preceded him in death on April 1, 2013.
At the age of sixteen years old. Bud became a brick mason and farmer. He served Western Oklahoma as a mason for the next forty years; all along continuing to farm. Bud established Hughes Sundries where he served as owner/operator for the next seven years in Hammon, Oklahoma. Upon retiring from the business, Bud farmed the remainder of his life; even checking cattle until just weeks prior to his death. Some of the most cherished memories of Bud are of checking cattle and cutting wheat at harvest.
Bud was a devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather. A member of the First Baptist Church in Hammon, Oklahoma. Lifetime member of American Angus Association.
Funeral Services will be held 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church in Hammon, OK. Rev Chuck Gilbert will officiate. Interment will be at Red Hill Cemetery, Hammon, Oklahoma. Services are under the direction of Martin-Dugger Funeral Home in Elk City, Oklahoma.

Bud is survived by beloved companion Darlene Richardson of Leedey, Oklahoma; one daughter Sandy Cornell and Husband John of Clinton, Oklahoma; son, Randy Hughes of Hammon, Oklahoma; three sisters, June Trent of Woodward, Oklahoma, Elnora Foster of Elk City, Oklahoma and Faye Graybill of Leedey, Oklahoma; a brother, Larry Hughes and wife, Shari of Rigby, Idaho; five grandchildren, April Thompson and husband, Joey of Guthrie, Oklahoma, Daniel Hughes and wife, Chelsea of Hammon, Oklahoma, John Lee Cornell and wife, Kelly of Clinton, Oklahoma, John Michael Cornell of Miami, Florida and John Paul Cornell of Cuernavaca, Mexico; and four great grandchildren, Jett Thompson, Josh Thompson, Jakob Thompson and Hunter Hughes.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Perry and Vera Hughes; two brothers, James Howard Hughes and Marvin Dale Hughes.
