Walter Jerry “Slick” Jones was born on September 27, 1929 in Wheeler County, Texas, to Woodrow Rumsey and Allie Frances (Conner) Jones. He went to be with the Lord on May 10, 2015 at the age of 85.
Walter attended Reydon Public School and joined the U.S. Army in 1948.
After being honorably discharged from the Army in 1950, he worked on the Morrison Ranch in Pampa, Texas, until 1957.
He then began working for the USDA in California, Oklahoma and finally Missouri, where he worked until retirement in 1990.
Walter then took a position with the State of Missouri importing and exporting animals.
After his second retirement in 1995, he and Joyce moved to Cordell, Oklahoma, where he enjoyed attending church, playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and making crafts in his woodshop.
Walter is survived by his wife Joyce of the home, three sons, Jerry and wife Janet of Taloga, Gary and wife Lisa of Mustang and Albert and wife Penny of Chester; one daughter, Lynae Ingram and husband Robert of Weatherford; three step-daughters, Nancy Montgomery and husband Robert of Seattle, Washington, Cindy St. John of Seattle, Washington, and Kathy St. John of Glenrock, Wyoming, 21 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, Franklin Myers and wife Patricia of Solvang, California; and one sister, Zella Hood of Fresno, California.
He was preceded in death by numerous family members and friends.
Services were held at the Calvary Baptist Church in Cordell, Oklahoma, Thursday, May 14, 2015. Interment followed at the Prairie Lawn Cemetery, Peabody, Kansas, on Friday, May 15, 2015.
Services were under the direction of Musick-Varner Funeral Home of Cordell, Oklahoma.
