ROGERS, Theresa Ann (Mercer)

Theresa Ann (Mercer) Rogers was born November 28, 1923 in Dallas, Texas to Ora Lee (Davidson) Mercer and Fred Elmo Mercer. She passed away surrounded by her loving family on May 13, 2016 in Sayre, Oklahoma.
At an early age, the family moved to Sayre where she began school. Due to the Great Depression, times were hard and the family struggled to make ends meet. She graduated from Sayre High School in 1941 and attended Radio School in Tonkawa, Oklahoma. After Radio School, she moved to Oklahoma City and due to World War II, she was employed by Douglas Aircraft. She remained there until deciding to enlist in the U.S. Navy but 4 days after enlisting, the War ended. She returned to Sayre where she worked for one of the local banks. It was in Sayre where she met J.C. Rogers, Jr. and they were married on June 12, 1948. J.C. taught Veterans Agricultural Classes in the Beckham County area. A son, John Fred, was born on March 31, 1950. The family moved to Stillwater Oklahoma in 1951 where J.C. finished his degree in Agricultural Education in 1953. On July 4, 1953, a second child, Jena Elizabeth, was born in Sayre. Soon after, the family moved to Cheyenne where J.C. began teaching Vocational Agricultural and founded the local FFA Chapter. In 1956 a second son, James Roy was born on December 7th. Except for a two year stint in Erick, the family lived in Cheyenne until 1968, when they moved to Sayre where J.C. taught VoAg and Theresa began working at Northfork Electric Cooperative. She met and made many friends at Northfork until her retiring in 1989.
Theresa was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, James Roy, her parents, an infant brother, J.D., 2 additional brothers, Fred, Jr. and Jack, and a sister, Jean.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, John F and Denise Rogers of Sayre, Oklahoma; a daughter, Elizabeth, also of Sayre, Oklahoma; two granddaughters, Dr. Tara Peyton and husband, Jeff and his children, Madison and Luke, Katy Stewart and her significant other, Michael Jarrett, all of Edmond, Oklahoma; a brother and sister-in-law, James and Carolyn Mercer of Santa Fe, New Mexico and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Sayre United Methodist Church officiated by Pastor Marvin Stuckey. Burial will be at Sayre-Doxey Cemetery under the direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Service. Condolences can be made online at www.Martin-DuggerFuneralHome.com
