Bula May Sides was born May 4, 1923 in the family home near Reydon, Oklahoma to Cleo Gertrude (Provines) and James Madison Clay. She passed away March 1, 2016 at Durham, Oklahoma at the age of 92 years, 9 months and 27 days.
Bula May was the oldest of seven children, four sisters and two brothers. She attended grade school at Midway and later graduated from Reydon High School in 1941. She entered college at Southwestern Oklahoma State College in Weatherford, Oklahoma during the fall semester of 1941. During World War II, Bula May put her college education on hold and obtained employment at the Boeing Aircraft plant in Wichita, Kansas working as a riveter for the war effort. She later returned to Weatherford, Oklahoma to complete her college degree in 1947. Upon graduation, she returned to Durham, Oklahoma where she taught school for one year
On May 22, 1949 Bula May married Samuel M. Sides and they lived on their farm south of Durham where they raised their five sons. Throughout the following years Bula May became a member of the Durham Church of Christ and was a Bible Study teacher of children for several years. After Sam’s passing in 1980, Bula May continued to live south of Durham. Even though she was diagnosed with Alzheimer‘s , Bula May always saw the most important years of her life was when she was a wife, mother and being a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, Russell and Kenneth Clay.
She is survived by her five sons, Dan Sides and wife, Marcella, Durham, OK; Charles Sides, Woodward, OK; Gary Sides, Reydon, OK; Kevin Sides, Amarillo, TX and Bill Sides and wife, Carol, Weatherford, OK: 16 grandchildren, Wesley, Carla, Chandra, Ashley, Olan, Russell, Angelyn, Caleb, Amanda, Carson, Samuel, Brock, Christina, Stephanie, Morgan and Logan; 22 great grandchildren; 1 great great granddaughter; four sisters, Gertrude Flesher, Clinton, OK; Dean Robison, Follett, TX: Hester Millemon, Rolla, KS and Mildred Harrison, Attica, KS and a host of other relatives and friends.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Angelyn Sides and the staff and faculty at Faith Hospice. Without the dedication of her granddaughter and hospice, Bula May would not have been able to remain in her own home for the past two years.
Services will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2016 at 10 a.m. in the Church of Christ, Durham, OK with burial following at the Fairview Cemetery.
